Today, October 18, is Persons Day, a day that marks the historic 1929 decision recognizing women as “persons” under Canadian law. This milestone opened the door for women to participate fully in public life.
At Baobab Black Seniors Care Society, this day means more than a date in history. It celebrates the strength and vision of women who lead, create, and build change. Our organization is founded and led by Black Canadian immigrant women , reflecting the power of women’s leadership in building stronger, more just communities. We honor the women who paved the way and the many women who continue to lead, care, and inspire across generations.
As we work to create culturally affirming spaces for Black seniors, we stand on the shoulders of those who fought for equity and dignity for all. We honour the women who came before us, the women who lead today, and the young women who will shape tomorrow. Your courage, vision, and care build stronger communities for us all.
Here is to Black women, Indigenous women, immigrant women, and women of every background who make history every day. Your strength, resilience, and determination inspire us all. Celebrating your achievements and contributions enriches our communities and paves the way for a brighter future.
