Lest We Forget – Remembrance Day

On this Remembrance Day November 11th, 2025, Baobab Black Seniors Care Society pauses to honour and remember the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of all veterans, who contributed to Global Wars, especially the Black veterans who served Canada with distinction and often in the face of exclusion and discrimination.

Throughout our nation’s history, Black soldiers were forced to fight two battles,  one for their country and another for the right to serve it. During the World Wars, Black Canadian soldiers stood on the front lines of global conflicts, often without recognition. Their courage helped secure the freedoms and cultural foundations we know today. As Dr. Kathy Hogarth of the University of Waterloo reminds us, “When we talk about veterans, we don’t talk about Blacks. If we begin to talk about Blacks, we have to add another layer, because there was another fight to even get into fighting for our country.”

Today, Baobab stands in gratitude and remembrance of these unsung heroes. Their service and sacrifice form part of the foundation on which our communities continue to stand. We commit to ensuring their stories are told, their names remembered, and their contributions acknowledged within Canada’s collective history.

To all Black veterans known and unknown, we thank you. Your legacy endures in every act of justice, dignity, and freedom we continue to pursue.
