On Monday, September 22, Baobab hosted Harvest Connections at Sweet Digz Farm in Richmond from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. The gathering brought Black seniors together, coming from Coquitlam, Richmond and Surrey. Elder Pauline Blackman was present and she opened the group discussion. Seniors were so open to share their stories, enjoyed the outdoor fresh air, beautiful weather, and connected with each other in a warm, culturally grounded space.
We had a great turnout. Many seniors attended and filled the afternoon with conversation, laughter, and quiet moments of reflection. Participants said they felt welcomed, seen, and more connected and always loved to have such a community. Several described the event as a gentle reset that eased feelings of isolation and lifted their mood. Others stated they know many seniors in their circle who are in great need of Baobab services, and they were going to refer them.
The feedback fits what Baobab is working toward every day. We create spaces where Black seniors’ voices and traditions are respected, and where belonging is real. Events like Harvest Connections support that mission by reducing loneliness, strengthening community ties, and opening simple pathways to support and care. Before the end of the event a meal was provided. Thanks to our Tommie’s Jerk for providing a culturally appropriate delicious chicken jerk/beef jerk and vegetarian meal. Our seniors were given by Sweet Digz Farm a goodie bag of locally grown fresh organic vegetables to take home.
Thank you to everyone who joined and to our volunteers Vimbai Chaita and Paulina Meta who helped out. Your presence made the day special, and it moved us closer to our vision of Black elders in BC living with dignity, health, and cultural connection.
